We often see people work with heat in the workshop. It is called welding. In this process, you can join two metals with heat and make it one permanently. After welding, you can use that object for any projects like repairing, home improvement etc. You can weld any metal type elements here I will talk about how to weld stainless steel. If you want to work with stainless steel than you have to know some things that will help to weld fast and proper.
The stainless steel comes with different types of metal. There is an external layer that is made of chromium oxide. It is rust resistant. For the thickness, the stainless steel is hard to weld. And another problem is when you start to heat, the steel gets bend and twisted which effects the appearance and strength. There are many kinds of welding process but for stainless steel wedding use Mig (FCAW or GMAW), Tig (GTAW) and stick (SMAW).
The process of welding stainless steel:
- First, ensure your safety. Wear protective gear is for starting to weld. Get full-length pants and shirts and wear them. Gloves, eyewear, and ear protection gear is a must.
- Take the best connecting method. For welding. The popular ones are but, corner, lap, edge and T.
- Know the thickness, joint easiness strength power.
- When you are ready to weld, place your metal and fix it with jigs.
- There are types of welding stainless steel. There is shielded metal are Gas tungsten are, keyhole gas tungsten, flux cored are. Pick the one that suits your steel.
- When you are welding stainless steel use a filler metal. Make sure it is compatible with the base metal.
- About the base metal, you have clean it. For clearing it your base metal will stay free of oxide form. You have to use a wire brush that is specially made of stainless steel cleaning. This brush removes remaining burrs and oxides. You have to wear glove to avoid getting oil in hands.
- Do the welding at room temperature. Austenitic steel doesn’t need preheat. Martensitic steel needs preheat.
- While welding use welding torch. When you are done with welding then pre-heat the steel.
- You will face some side effect while cooling down the stainless steel. Your metal may get crack, so preheat is required. This helps to join metal quick.
- There will be a slag on the spot remove it by using a hammer.
Pros and cons of weld:
With weld, you can melt and create shapes. You will see welding in producing large machines and different pipe system. With doing welding anyone can earn money well. Yes, this welding process has benefit and disadvantage also. Let’s check them out:
Pros:
- This skill is very much appreciable to all types of industries like mining, construction, agriculture, and architecture. You can also work as a trainer. You can say this field is full of job facilities. The best thing about this field is it has a professional certified program. You can get training from different vocational programs. This program allows you to get well trained before starting your work professionally.
- A welder gets a good salary if the work is done properly.
- The welded constructions are lighter than fascinated structures. Because in welding connecting machinery are not used.
- The welded joins provide extreme efficiency which is not possible in riveted joins.
- Changes and additions easily made in existing constructions.
- The welded structure is smooth in appearance and pleasing.
- In welded joints are not weakened as riveted joints.
- A welded joint has a great strength
- The welding delivers inflexible joints.
- The method of welding takes less time than the riveting.
Cons:
- Welding is not an easy job. The common accident as a welder is burned injuries. It takes years to get burn proof. Your eye will get irritated with toxic gas and other dangerous materials. Welding job is not only for big space, sometimes you will have to work in small space, hot or freezing weather. Also, you will have to be strong to wield a metal joint that is not possible for everyone.
- Very time-consuming work. Sometimes you may need to go long way and spent hours and hours. This job has a deadline. So you have to work hard to complete the work. It may take days and long hours to meet the end.
- As it is an outdoor work, you have to deal with the weather. Sometimes there will be thunder, rain and so on. Your work will get stopped for the climates. Sometimes you may miss the deadline for the weather.
- As there are a rough heating and cooling fabrication, stresses develop.
- It needs an extremely skilled supervision and labor.
- Since no establishment is kept for development and contraction in the frame, there is an option of cracks rising in it.
- The check of welding work is difficult than riveting work.
Welding is only purposed to join the metals. But it has to be done properly or else the joint will get cracked or damaged. So you have to know how to weld stainless steel properly. Stainless steel weld is tougher than other materials but if you do it with care and properly than your work will be a masterstroke. You can use this steel for any works in your home or workplace. Welding is time-consuming and needs a lot of focus when you work. So if you want to weld something be focused and keep patience.
