Mystah Spaulding, aka “The Irish Killa” born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. At the age of 11 relocated to Attleboro, Massachusetts. With deep roots firmly rooted to the New England Underground a young Spaulding entered into the world of Underground music with a savage focus and determination matched by no other. We had a great conversation with Mystah Spaulding, enjoy the interview here:
Tention Free : Let’s talk a bit about your work and what is the secret behind your success ?
My work is very important to me, as i feel that long after My physical being is gone and decayed, my soul will remain to help my listeners and followers that I’ve been so lucky to have accumulated over the years. My secret to the success That I’ve enjoyed, as well as other artists on my collective (Cesspool Asylum Artist Collective) have enjoyed is not really a secret at all: Hard work and a lot of sacrifice. Unfortunately, This also means the dissolution of my first marriage. I put everything I have into my work, and i feel like People really appreciate artists that put everything into their art.
Tention Free : Can you please tell our readers about your latest project?
The latest thing I have been working on is my first EP set to drop on the CAAC is “Mystah Spaulding Presents: The Irish EP”. Which I came about from my proud Irish Heritage. This is a theme that is recurring throughout my career as some names that i’m also known by is “The Irish Killa”, “The Keltik Warrior”, among various other “NickNames”. I also Have some other projects (Collaborations) with artists such as: Canna CDK (Earworm Entertainment), S.K. The Magnificent, and my business partner in the CAAC, Grim Singmuf. I am also working on something new with my long time homie Kellie Wolfe.
Tention Free : Any upcoming project?
There’s quite a few upcoming projects, I have one planned currently with artists internal and external to the Cesspool. I always enjoy working on new projects with as many artists as I can. I feel this helps me to learn and grow as an artist. I also have another full length album in the works, But I believe that it would be best to keep that kinda in the dark for now, to add to the mystery. All I can say is that anybody who has followed me for a while certainly are gonna be blown away when this little project comes to light!
Tention Free : Please tell us more about your music style ?
My musical style comes from actually a really broad range of musical genres and styles. I believe my content would lead most people to believe that I’m strictly a Horrorcore Artist. Although my style does touch deeply on horror themes, I find that I just rap about the truth and how things really are. I’m 24 Years old and I’ve lived enough life to be at least 50 Years old.
Tention Free : Who are your musical inspirations?
As stated above, I really have a broad spectrum of influencing artists. I pretty much will listen to anything but Opera, but as a general guide, some artists I find myself rocking to are: Insane Clown Posse, Twiztid, Avril Lavigne, Three Days Grace, N.W.A., The Digital Underground, Barry White, Greenday, Aaron Tippin, Boondox, KMK, & of course Jason Aldean. I know I don’t like to pigeonhold myself to one genre or Way of doing things, so why should The music I listen to be from one genre/subgenre?
Tention Free : Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to be a professional recording artist ?
If I had to give advice to an up-and-comer, the biggest advice I could offer is to always stay humble. Don’t forget about the “Little people” as they sometimes call themselves. (I still don’t really understand what people mean when they tell me that, as I feel that everyone I’ve met so far has influenced me in one form or another, but anyway…) Keep your eyes on the prize young buck! and no matter what, always be professional. Nobody likes to deal with scumbags, and it’s no different in the world of music.
Tention Free : Have you set some goals to achieve ?
I have as a matter of fact, nothing would get done if Grim and I didn’t. The first goal I have set, which has already been reached is to break the 300 mark for fans, next, I’d like Cesspool Asylum to get to a family of at least 9 Artists/personalities. Currently we have three signed recording artists, (two of whom double as producers), and a DJ/Live Sound Engineer. I’ll tell you too that I have also set some tour-related goals, and Grim and I are in the process of making that happen. So Keep ya eyes peeled Music Lovers!
Tention Free : If you could perform anywhere, in the world, where would it have to be?
If I could Perform anywhere in the world, It would actually have to be Germany. I taught myself German, and actually have some lyrics that I’ve spit in the language. I’ve also seen footage of various bands performing in Deutschland, and it always seems to be a good time. An example I can give is like The Live Aid tour.
Tention Free : Please share with us your proudest moments ?
One of my proudest moments, is actually from when I started back in 2009, When my First EP dropped. My homie Eric and I (Known Then as the Northeast Killaz) put out the NEK mixtape. Hearing my voice and my skill on the EP was both really strange to me, but also made me proud in that This is my art and now, It’s out there forever. Another moment where I felt really proud was back at a show in Providence in February of this year, Where I was talking to Lex The Hex Master from Majik Ninja Entertainment, and I introduced myself, and he said something to the effect of “Yeah, I remember you were just getting on the stage when we were coming in, I really liked your set.” As one of my more recently acquired inspirations, That conversation both meant a lot to me and made me extremely proud of the work i put in to my music and my live set.
