Tention Free : So Joni tell us a little bit about yourself. Your ethnicity, schooling, passion etc. ??
Well I was never really too good at school lol but I was always passionate about creating something since I was little, about five. I would always remember saying things like “one day I’m going to make something that everybody loves!”
I come from a Mexican household. My father was born in Ensenada and my mother in Michoacan, MX. Although I was born and raised in California my parents instilled to me Mexican traditions, music, and culture.
Tention Free : We’ve noticed you’re starting to gain a lot of attention, how does it feel?
Since I started singing I knew it was going to be something difficult, the career I mean. I feel like you really got to have your head on straight and luckily I feel like I’ve never lost the sense of what’s really all important… my family and my music but yes it feels good I guess hehe.
Tention Free : So is it family or music?
Family has always been first in my life and music is right behind it.
Tention Free : Any upcoming projects?
We have a couple of upcoming duets with Ruth Tejeda from the Sonora de Los Angeles and this new Aladdin single that’s out now, Selene Canchola from Mariachi Alma de Oro is featured in it.
Tention Free : What has been one of the most exciting achievements of your career so far ?
I don’t like to get too excited about achievements because I feel like maybe it takes me off of my course if I dwell too much in celebrating them but interestingly enough it was the first time I heard myself on a demo record. Guess I just always imagined hearing my voice and it took so long so finally there it was a song with my voice on a “grupo norteno” track.
Tention Free : What motivates you to do your best work?
You know when I was little I used to listen to songs and the melodies would fill me up with nostalgia. I just remember saying to myself one day when I grow up I’ll make somebody feel like this too.
Tention Free : Did you choose this industry, as a career, or as a hobby?
Well I definitely kind of just gave up on schooling and pursued music full time so I would say as a career and now I have a “grupo norteno.”
Tention Free : Everybody needs time out. What do you do in your free time?
I love my little husky his name’s Loving so any free time I have is usually with him and family. Family first!
Tention Free : How can people find you and follow you online?
