Today we are talking to Gavin McLean, Private pilot and IT consultant.
Check out the interview :
Tention Free : What are you working on now?
Gavin McLean :
Among other things, I’m currently working on the AeroMagic project; myself, three of my fellow pilot friends from Gil Layt’s flying school and magicians are currently planning a trip to Birdsville, approximately 1400km west of Brisbane
We’re taking two light aircraft and we’ve still got some spare seats. It only requires a trivial amount of money and the type of person that doesn’t mind being locked in a small metal box and bouncing along patches of dirt that are apparently called runways. Know anyone that might be interested?
Tention Free : Going to the Australian outback sounds like you are getting yourself into a place where there is only sand and dangerous animals, are you sure that is a good idea?
Gavin McLean :
Ask me again when I get back…
Tention Free : Please tell our readers more about your Aero Magic Project?
Gavin McLean :
The idea first started over a couple of beers (like most great ideas) between a few friends. It evolved from simply going to the Birdsville races, to an adventure taking a week to get there in light aircraft, while attempting to raise some money for the RFDS through some magic shows along the way.
Tention Free : Isn’t flying dangerous?
Gavin McLean :
Every time you step outside your home, get in your car, you take a risk! Flying is a transport system, and in my opinion is less dangerous than driving due to the fact that there is less people up there!
Tention Free : Please tell our readers about Aeromagic.com.au ?
Gavin McLean :
It’s our website for the project. Aside from attempting to create some awareness about our project, we plan to post short videos from our adventure during the week of the trip for anyone interested in following the activity/shenanigans.
Tention Free : Do you set goals for yourself and how do you do that?
Gavin McLean :
Absolutely! I’d like to say there was some great science to it, but in reality is there isn’t. When I find something I want to do I find a way to make it happen. This approach doesn’t always turn out to be successful, but the easiest way not to fail is to simply not try at all. Learning to fly has been one of those endeavours; it was certainly a risk as there was absolutely no guarantee of success. Fortunately it’s worked out which has allowed me to be part of the AeroMagic project.
Tention Free : You mentioned there are some magicians on this trip, who are they?
Gavin McLean :
One of them is a Brisbane corporate performer called Dave Lord and he is amazing.
There is a second performer, Fabrice, who is amazing as well. I know because he is a magician/Chapeaugrapher (Google it!) as well as my flight instructor (and I promise he didn’t pay me to say that!).
Tention Free : A flight instructor and a magician, does he do magic tricks while giving flight lessons?
Gavin McLean :
I can’t tell you, it’s a trade secret. The best way to find out is to go and have a flight lesson with him!
Tention Free : How can people find you and follow you online?
Gavin McLean :
Aeromagic.com.au is an excellent place to start.
Tention Free : why should we follow your adventure ?
Gavin McLean :
If you are interested about what it takes to fly small aircraft in the remote parts of Australia, or if you would like to see some of the Australian Outback, as well as seen some magic performances during that trip, you can follow us.
