I recently had to go through endoscopy, so I thought about sharing my experience with my readers here. I was facing stomach related problems for a year. Gone through several treatments but nothing seems to be working. So finally my doctor decided to do an endoscopy to diagnose the problem deeply. I wasn’t having good feelings about endoscopy so the fear was there. But after the procedure, my overall experience wasn’t as bad as I was expecting.
I was told to atleast 12 hours fasting before endoscopy. So I kept my stomach empty. Frankly speaking, the fear along with an empty stomach was creating some fuss. But anyhow I reached the hospital at the appointed time. I was hoping I would be given anesthesia and I will not be in my senses during the process. But I was partially wrong here. They used anesthesia to numb only specific areas so that I would not feel the pain. But overall I was in my senses and I experienced all the procedures while I was fully awake.
The doctor put the endoscope in my mouth down to the throat. The endoscope was very thin having a flexible insertion tube. There were a camera and light at the end of that tube. It wasn’t painful but not comfortable either. At one point I felt like vomiting but luckily I didn’t. The camera was capturing the images inside my stomach and showing the visuals on the screen attached to it.
The process lasted for a few minutes. The doctor inserted it a bit further to view the other portion, which was really uncomfortable. But I was curious about the flexibility and bending ability of the endoscope tube. So once the procedure was done, I asked the doctor and I was told the part that makes it all possible is bending section mesh. It bends it to the level required.
After the process, I felt like soar throat. I was told not to eat or drink anything for the next few hours. And I can rest for a few hours and I can go to my work from the next day. And I was advised no to drive home myself. I was already fearing that that’s why I came with my cousin.
So overall endoscopy is not painful, but it can be uncomfortable. You can’t eat of drink post and past endoscopy for a numer of hours. You can feel soar throat after the procedure. But it’s pretty useful to diagnose the actual problem.
