Tention Free : Let’s talk a bit about your work and what is the secret behind your success ?
Kinderjazz :
We started KINDERJAZZ as a response to children’s entertainment becoming disconnected from something real. Real instruments, real voices, live entertainment. I think we’ve kept it real. It’s a 12 piece acoustic band and everything you hear comes from a musician’s heart and soul. It’s organic and I think that sets up apart from so much out there for kids.
Tention Free : What is your mission ?
Kinderjazz :
To educate, empower and entertain children through a funky Jazz Big Band so they can see the invisible, believe the incredible and be fabulous. We believe all children are magnificent and we play to that magnificence.
Tention Free : How did you feel when you performed in Parramatta Stadium ?
Kinderjazz :
Playing in any big arena is amazing. The audience was very receptive and I think everything is just amplified because of the larger crowd – the vibe, the excitement, the moves. Very exciting!
Tention Free : Where would you most like to perform?
Kinderjazz :
Sesame Street. That would just be the bomb!
Tention Free : Do you set goals for yourself and how do you do that?
Kinderjazz :
We set goals for our albums. It’s expensive recording a big band and we carefully plan for each one. As far as performances, not so much. It’s a mixture of other people booking us and putting on shows ourselves.
Tention Free : What motivates you to do your best work ?
Kinderjazz :
I would have to say our passion for music. When the musicians in KINDERJAZZ get together, it’s like a party. The music then overflows to the families and it becomes a dance. If the music is good then everything else flows perfectly.
Tention Free : What hidden talents do you have?
Kinderjazz :
KINDERJAZZ musicians are all virtuosos and perform in their own bands. I would have to say they are multi-talented on so many levels. We love spending time with each other. I don’t think we hide any of our talents. We’re interested in education, food, travel, art. This list is endless. George Washingmachine, our lead singer is not only a fabulous jazz violinist and guitarist, he is a visual artist and I have one of his creations hanging in my lounge room. We are so blessed to have such a multitude of talent.
Tention Free : Tell us about your Awards nominations ?
Kinderjazz :
I was awarded Australian Citizen of the Year 2012 ,for my work in music education through KINDERJAZZ. It was such a great validation for the importance of exposing children to the highest quality music. In 2010 we were chosen to be on Putumayo Kid’s first jazz album which went onto win US Parent’s Choice GOLD Award. It was really exciting as America is our biggest audience outside of Australia. Most recently we won The Akademia 2016 Award for Best Children’s Song. It was a huge surprise and we are humbled by the accolade.
Tention Free : What do you find most inspires you to do that work?
Kinderjazz :
I work with children with special needs as I find music is a real bridge to developing their brain. My inspiration is always the children. They give so much and expect so little in return. I feel privileged to live in the music zone and want to share this with as many children as possible. Music is such an outreach. It brings happiness.
