Tention Free : Let’s talk a bit about your work and what is the secret behind your success ?
Daniel Carl :
First of all, thank you for allowing me to have this interview with you. I have been a professional musician for a long time now. (30 years). I have been there done that. Good and bad both. I have learned from mistakes and from people that have been huge support for me. I am not a touring concert musician. My full time work is composing for commercials and film. I love doing that. I do what I love to do. The key I think to success is to pursue your passion. It will pay off if you persist. Sometimes in ways you may not expect but it will come to you if you persist.
Tention Free : What are you working on now?
Daniel Carl :
Other than writing and producing client’s music I am currently working on a smooth jazz album. I hope to have that out by the end of the year.
Tention Free : If you could perform anywhere, in the world, where would it have to be?
Daniel Carl :
I have always thought it would be cool to play at the Montreal Jazz Festival in Canada.
Tention Free : Please tell our readers about your CD “Bossa Bone” ?
Daniel Carl :
About 2 years ago I started to work on ideas for a jazz CD. I have always loved Latin Jazz of any kind. I thought to honor two great composers that pioneered the style of Bossa Nova I would arrange some classic songs they have written. They are Antonio Jobim and Joao Gilberto. These two helped create a legendary library of songs that will last forever in history. The trombone lends well to the style of Bossa Nova. It is just a lot of fun to play. The CD is pretty laid back. It is perfect for a romantic dinner or to dance to.
Tention Free : Who are your musical inspirations?
Daniel Carl :
I am a huge fan of jazz. But I listen to all kinds of music from every genre and style. Being a trombonist I listen to J.J. Johnson, Conrad Herwig and Willie Colon. Especially for Latin Jazz. I also like the classic crooners Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Tony Bennett and Michael Buble.
Tention Free : What hidden talents do you have?
I play a mean foosball game.
Tention Free : Where would you most like to perform?
Daniel Carl :
Another place I would like to go to is Denmark. I hear that jazz scene is great there.
Tention Free : Do you set goals for yourself and how do you do that?
Daniel Carl : I do set goals but I am not a disciplinarian. I am pretty laid back. My passion for what I do motivates me to complete and achieve my musical goals.
Tention Free : What motivates you to do your best work as a musician?
Daniel Carl :
Listening to other great players. There are so many gifted musicians out there. Having the internet is a huge help because it is so easy to hear great music of any style.
Tention Free : Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to be a professional musician as a career?
Daniel Carl :
There are two things I would tell anyone wanting to be in music. One of course, is to practice your butt off and keep doing that for the rest of your life. The other is don’t play to become famous or rich. Do it out of passion for creating music. Otherwise you won’t last and it won’t be as fun.
Tention Free : How can people find you and follow you online?
Daniel Carl :
You can go to my website at www.danielcarlmusic.com. To get the CD go to http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/danielcarl. The CD and download is available at all the major sites like Itunes and Amazon. You can catch me on facebook.
